The National Trust's ram-cam set to become ewe-tube sensation
A unique 90 second video from the National Trust showing a ram's eye view as he 'meets' his new flock of ewes is set to become a 'ewe-tube' hit, say online farmers.
The ram, named Peacland Paolo, is the latest arrival at the National Trust's My Farm experiment at Wimpole Home Farm in Cambridgeshire which is aiming to reconnect people with where their food comes from.
Paolo, a Portland ram, was fitted with a camera measuring 60mm by 42mm, weighing just 167 grams last week.
The film shows him exploring his new home, giving MyFarm farmers an exclusive ram's eye view of tupping (mating).
He is expected to tup around 30 ewes over the next 4-6 weeks. The ewes will give birth to their lambs next spring.
Wimpole Farm Manager Richard Morris said: "It will be fascinating to see just what a day in the life of a ram is like.
"Although we have a good idea that most of his time will be spent grazing, sleeping and mating, it will be interesting to see it all from his point of view.
"We kept Paolo in a pen when he first arrived at the farm as part of his quarantine and so that he could adjust to his new home. But, we've now introduced him to the ewes and he's outside enjoying the grass.
"It may seem a bit strange that we want to follow and even film Paolo as he goes about his business, but farming is all about breeding, growing and harvest - so it's only right that we should come up with ram-cam. This is nature as it happens and we hope it will be seen as something that reminds people what it takes to get food on their plate. The pressure is now on Paolo to perform!"
Paolo is 18 months old and this is his first season of tupping. He is expected to mate with 2-3 ewes a day with this figure increasing to 6-8 ewes a day when he's older.
The Wimpole farm team is keeping a close eye on Paolo to make sure the camera in no way hinders his daily life, or becomes stressful for him in any way.
If at any time the camera is suspected of bothering him, the ram will be caught and the camera removed.
There are nine other rams at Wimpole who have between them 260 ewes to mate with over the next two months.
Subscribers to MyFarm will be able to watch the results of Paolo's efforts next spring in Wimpole's very own 'lambing live' when 260-300 lambs are expected to be born.

Kelvin MacKenzie signs Sports Tonight Live to VisionIPTV
Journalist and broadcaster Kelvin MacKenzie is to take to the VisionIPTV stand at this year’s MIPCOM, the world's entertainment content market show in Cannes, France, to present the launch of Sports Tonight Live, a new channel delivered via the internet on the FreeviewHD platform.
Fronted by Mike Parry, formerly of TalkSport Radio, and comedian Ian Stone, Sports Tonight Live will be the first channel in the UK to be available on the FreeviewHD platform with content delivered via broadband over the internet via an HD set top box. This enables the programmers to develop a cost effective channel with a potential reach of more than 5 million households this year, and gain total penetration to 26 million UK households by 2015.
Sports Tonight Live is the first English language channel to use VisionIPTV’s studio production and internet broadcast playout services to deliver ground breaking entertainment via the FreeviewHD EPG on channel 112.
John Mills, CEO of Vision IPTV, said: “Kelvin MacKenzie has built a reputation as a broadcaster who likes to tear down barriers, and do things his way. The capability to deliver interactive internet broadcast content, via FreeviewHD, into the living room gives broadcasters such as Kelvin the ability to deliver unique programming and new television experiences to the audience. We are very pleased to be able to host Kelvin at MIPCOM and look forward to hearing more about his vision for the future of sports broadcasting.”
The show’s format encourages live debate from viewers who contact the show via Skype video-call or Twitter. The digital interactivity can also be extended by the two way nature of the internet broadcast, providing the show’s producers with the capability to poll the audience live for instant reaction from where it counts, the fans sat in front of the TV with their remote.
Kelvin MacKenzie will appear on the Vision IPTV stand (G3.20) on the afternoon of Wednesday 5th October at MIPCOM, Cannes, France.

Npower teams up with Sky Sports to launch ad-funded TV show
Npower's new three part ad-funded TV series, 'What’s Your Goal', is set to launch on Sky Sports on Thursday 25th August - the culmination of npower's successful 2011 campaign of the same name.
The series captures the moments that six children from around the UK discover they are handpicked as winners of the npower What's Your Goal competition, to be mentored by some of the brightest and best in the football industry.
Viewers will follow the journeys of the young winners as they work side-by-side with their mentors, getting their hands dirty and mucking in with the professionals before being set a challenge relating to the day-to-day workings of the role.
Npower's 'What’s Your Goal' is a football-based initiative launched as part of npower's title sponsorship of the npower Football League. It was designed to inspire young people aged 12-16 to think about their future careers by showcasing the different roles available behind the scenes of football clubs up and down the UK.
Sky currently holds the broadcasting rights for the npower Football League and teamed up with npower, commissioning production company North One to capture the action. The shows are voiced by Sky presenter Ben Shepherd, who also features in the final episode which airs in September.
Along with Sky Sports presenter Dave Jones and long time Sky Sports TV producer Billy McGinty, the 'What's Your Goal' winners also spend time with Ipswich Town's business manager, an Action Images sports photographer and one of the npower Football League's most senior female referees, Sasa Ihringova.
QPR's manager, Neil Warnock also features in the series to mentor a young QPR fan who joins him and his team amidst talk of possible point deductions by the FA, when the future of QPR's promotion into the Premier League looked uncertain.
Clare McDougall, npower's head of education and community, said: "What's Your Goal offered young people fantastic one-in-a-lifetime experiences that allowed them to get stuck in with the professionals and learn the ropes first hand, so we weren’t surprised by the overwhelming response we got from parents and their children across the UK.
"As not everyone could win the mentoring days, we worked with schools and parents to offer lesson plans and content that was designed to educate youngsters about the endless possibilities in the football industry, inspiring them to think about their future careers by looking at what they enjoy and thinking about potential opportunities.
"The TV show will help to spread npower’s What’s Your Goal message even further and we look forward to seeing npower's 'What’s Your Goal' winners as they make their TV debuts on screen, showing the world how ambitious and talented our teenagers are and hopefully encouraging others to start thinking about what their goal is."
